Some scents can bring back a whole moment. Patchouli is one of them.

For some of us, its earthy fragrance brings to mind flowing dresses, well-loved records, incense drifting through a room, and a time when personal style felt wonderfully free. But patchouli’s story began long before the ’60s and ’70s.

From Fabric to Fragrance

Patchouli comes from the leaves of an aromatic plant. In the 1800s, its scent became familiar in Europe through shawls imported from India. The leaves were used when packing fabrics, and their distinctive fragrance lingered long after the journey. Before long, patchouli found a place in perfumery, too.

Why Did Everyone Love It in the ’60s and ’70s?

By the late 1960s, many young people were embracing clothes, music, and ideas that expressed a different way of living. Patchouli’s deep, earthy smell felt right at home alongside Indian fabrics, handmade jewelry, and the easygoing style of the era.

It was a scent you could recognize as soon as someone walked into a room. For many people, it came to represent youth, freedom, and the courage to be yourself.

A Little Nostalgia, Worn Your Way

Patchouli still has that unmistakable character. Some people love it on its own; others enjoy it softened with floral, citrus, or warmer notes. Either way, it has a way of stirring a memory—or helping make a new one.

That’s what we love about vintage-inspired style at Retro Wildflower Boutique. A scent, a sweater, or a favorite flowing dress can remind us of another time while feeling completely our own today.

Do you love patchouli, or does it take you straight back to someone you knew? We’d love to hear the memory it brings up for you.
